Former Scientology officials Marty Rathbun and Mike Rinder have described how much church leader David Miscavige was counting on the film, and Travolta, to produce a wave of new interest in Hubbard and Scientology. But after the movie bombed, Miscavige suddenly pretended he’d had nothing to do with it, and Travolta permanently lost favor with him.
