Der Führer's Face

Wij kenden het lied 'Der Führer's Face' alleen in de uitvoering van Spike Jones and His City Slickers en het was ons ontschoten dat het lied ook gebruikt was in een tekenfilm met Donald Duck. Toen wij 'Donald Duck - 50 years of happy frustration' (ISBN 0-9509517-0-6) voor het eerst lazen, kenden wij eerdergenoemd lied namelijk nog niet en toen wij de uitvoering van Spike Jones c.s. hoorden (op de Hallmark CD 'Clink, Clink, Another Drink'), waren wij allang weer vergeten wat wij over die tekenfilm uit 1943 gelezen hadden (op bladzijde 30 en 32 van genoemd boek):

"Education for Death, Reason and Emotion, Chicken Little and Der Fuehrer's Face were all pointed attacks at the Third Reich. The last is a bitter satire on life in Hitler's Germany. Donald is a starved, oppressed worker on a munitions assembly line. He is again cast as the little man, but this time he is crushed and driven to madness by a rigid totalitarian state that allows little or no hope for the individual.

The film was to be called Donald in Nutziland, but its name was changed before release to the title of a song by Oliver Wallace that figures prominently in it. The song became a hit on the record charts. Donald is agonizingly effective, and the entire picture is an artistic tour de force. So powerful was its impact that it was translated and smuggled into Germany, much to the chagrin of the Nazi Party. Donald as symbol of the Allied struggle is beautifully captured by the film's poster, which has him pelting Hitler smack in the eye with a ripe tomato. The tomato's dripping remains are used in the film to form the letters of the words "The End.""

En nu gaan wij dat Donaldduckboek herlezen, met Spike Jones op de achtergrond.
