Ubuntu

Ubuntu. Dat is toch een Linuxdistributie?Jazeker. Maar Ubuntu beweert dat het woord ubuntu iets betekent in het Bantoe, of zoiets. Nou, het zal best en als je op dit moment zoekt op het woord ubuntu, krijg je een hele hoop treffers. "Kom", dachten wij, "laat ons eens in een boek kijken, om te zien of we het woord ubuntu daarin kunnen vinden."

Ons favoriete naslagwerk (u weet wel, de Woordenschat uit 1899) heeft het woord niet, wat ons niet echt verbaasde, daar het pas recentelijk een klein beetje modieus is geworden. Derhalve is het ook geen verrassing dat de wikipedia het wel heeft: 'Ubuntu (filosofie)'.

Hoewel er "filosofie" achter staat, blijkt het dus eigenlijk gewoon een stukje zuidafrikaanse zweefkezerij te zijn. En zweefkezerij, daar houden wij niet zo van. De grens tussen filosofie en zweefkezerij is trouwens toch al vrij dun ("It's a thin line between stupid and clever"), maar dat is een heel ander verhaal. In ieder geval hebben wij de term ubuntu ook nog even opgezocht in 'The Hutchinson Dictionary of Ideas' (ISBN 0-87436-792-1), alwaar wij hem niet konden vinden. Wel vonden wij:

"Ubiquitarianism doctrine put forward by Martin Luther to explain his understanding of the Eucharist. Luther did not accept the Catholic idea of transubstantiation, nor was he happy with the idea that the bread and the wine were just memorials of the Last Supper. Instead he claimed that as Christ is present everywhere in his human nature, so he is present in a real sense in the bread and wine of the Eucharist."

Vervolgens dus niet ubuntu, maar wel:

"ulama the bodies of scholars in Islamic law which form the theocratic element of the government in Muslim countries. The ulama may issue fatwas - injunctions on questions that affect both public and private life."

Het is toch wat.
